An Introduction to The 22 Atu on The Tree of Life by keith rowley ![]() As explained in our Introduction to The Tarot Page, the cards of the Tarot map onto the Tree of Life. In essence, the Tree of Life forms a skeleton model of the universe, and the Tarot comprises the flesh, the blood, the organs, the mind and the soul. It will soon become apparent to you that each card of the Tarot, each part of the Tree of Life, exists at multiple levels, and that these levels permeate all of reality.
On Aleister Crowley's version of the Tree (there are others), shown on the left, you will see that the Atu are placed on the paths between the circles. The circles are called Sephiroth (in the plural) and there are ten of them. In the singular, each is termed a Sephirah. The Sephiroth are the ten Emanations of The Tree of Life. Each of them may be considered objectively as a source of particular Phenomena, as a unique aspect of the deity, or primal force that underpins our day to day reality. The first cards we shall examine are these 22 key cards, or Atu as Crowley called them. Each of these cards in Crowley's deck is a composite symbol, a glyph combining related elements from a variety of belief systems and mythologies. There is a great harmony in all of these compositions, and this is as it should be if Crowley did his job properly. For our myths and legends are all pointers to commonly held truths deeply embedded in the human subconscious. As centuries and millenia have passed, these great archetypal tales are mirrored, echoed, re-written and repeated. So it is little wonder that Christ, the sacrificed god, finds predecessors and counterparts such as Odin; and little wonder that these gods find their archetypal roots in the Sun God, which cycles through its cycles of life and death each day. It is a measure of the veracity of Kabbalah that these entities find a common place of being on the Tree of Life, as they do in human consciousness and the greater cosmic order. We will begin our analysis then with the Atu called The Fool. Click here to proceed to analysis of Atu Zero through Three.
